Germany could have tax-free World Cup

First Published: Feb 24, 1999

Germany's bid to host the 2006 World Cup was boosted this morning by the news that the tax authorities in the country will not tax the event.

The finals will be awarded in March 2000 with South Africa the clear favourites to be awarded the games but Germany are in close contention with the English in a split European bid. Any cultural or sporting event in Germany has to pay 25% tax on any money it makes but the World Cup would be exempt safeguarding a massive cash bonaza for television companies and sponsors.
