Schwarz agrees Sunderland move

First Published: Jul 29, 1999

Sunderland have completed the signing of Swedish international midfielder Stefan Schwarz.

The newly promoted Premiership side had been in talks since last week with the former Arsenal and Fiorentina player and agreed a £4 million fee with Valencia to buy the combative midfielder.

The deal then stalled as the Swede considered the implications of a move back to England for his family but finally agreed to move this morning. Schwarz was signed by Arsenal from Benfica in 1993 and helped the club to win the Cup Winners' Cup a year later.
