First Published: Jun 13, 2000

Norway sprung a surprise against highly fancied Spain to win 1-0 in Rotterdam and take charge of Group C in Euro 2000.

The Scandinavians were helped by a shocking goal keeping error from Jose Francisco Molina which shattered the team's reputation as title contenders and made it a struggle for the team to even make the last eight.

On 66 minutes in a scrappy game Norwegian goalkeeper Thomas Myrhe launched along free kick to the edge of the penalty area and onto th head of striker Steffen Iversen.

Iversen headed the ball behind him but turned and was surprised to see goalkeeper Molina next to him on the edge of the box and ball bouncing into the net.

What possessed Molina to come so far from goal with no hope of getting neat the ball will be a question for coach Jose Camacho to answer.

Norway brought the highly fancied Spain team down to their level with a direct style and solid defending.

What Norway lost in creativity and ambition thy made up for with defensive strength, well timed clearances and hard running.

Spain created little themselves as they tried to get back into the game but Michel; Salgado sent a dipping volley wide on 77 minutes and substitute Mendieta shit from a narrow angle on 79 minutes but Myrhe had his near post covered and bundled the ball away.

Both sides hit the post in a drab first half.

In the 8th minute a dipping shot on the run from Exteberria hit the bar and a glancing header from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hit the cross bar at the other end after a good cross from Bergdolmo.

The next best chance of the first half fell to Spain when Fran crossed from the right for Urzaiz to head down straight at Myrhe.

Spain never coped with the physical power of the Norwegians who slowed the game right down and showed a great defence to earn their win.
