Euro 2000 Group D - Holland 3 Denmark 0

First Published: Jun 16, 2000

Euro 2000 co hosts Holland overcame a miserable first half performance to beat Denmark 3-0 and make progress to the quarter finals of the tournament.

The Dutch join world champions France on two wins out of two in Group D to make the last match - in which Holland meet the French - a meaningless affair. Today's results mean that Denmark are eliminated from the tournament along with the Czech Republic.

Patrick Kluivert scored the first goal on 56 minutes when he side footed a loose ball back th\rough the penalty area into the corner of the net after Peter Schmeichel had saved at the feet of Dennis Bergkamp.

Boudewijn Zenden provided the second goal on 66 minutes when he crossed from the left to the far post where unmarked substitute Ronald De Boer tapped the ball in.

Zenden himself netted the third after a lung busting run from defender Michael Reiziger on 76 minutes.

The defender cleared the ball from a Danish corner by carrying it all the way up field and into the penalty area before squaring for Zenden to side foot wide of Schmeichel into the roof of the net.

The only worry for the Dutch is an injury to goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar. He was taken off in the 88th minute and replaced by Sander Westerveld with a thigh strain.

Frank Rijkaard's team looked worse than they had against the Czechs last weekend for much of a dire first session.

Denmark were the stronger team and should have taken a deserved lead in the 43rd minute when Gravesen stepped inside from the left and curled a dipping shot against the cross bar. More luck for the Dutch after two similar escapes in their first match and silence greeted the players in Rotterdam as they left the field.

Marc Overmars had missed a 28th minute half chance when a Peter Schmeichel save from Patrick Kluivert rebounded into his path and he clipped the ball just wide as the Danish 'keeper tried to recover at his feet.

Schmeichel produced another brave save at the feet of Dennis Bergkamp on 36 minutes when he poked the ball past a defender and ran on to shoot. Edgar Davids almost scored from the rebound but the Dutch fans were to be disappointed by a poor first half from their side in which the Danes were the better passing side.

Denmark also started the second session strongly. Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar turned away a 46th minute drive and saw Gronkjaer fire into the side netting after a run down the left hand side had ripped open the home defence.

Holland can now save strength along with France as they meet in a meaningless match next week but tonight Euro 2000 saw the first signs that the Dutch giant was waking up.
