Patrick Kluivert demolished Yugoslavia with four goals to put Euro 2000 co hosts Holland in to the semi finals.
The FC Barcelona star scored four times to become the top scorer in the tournament with six goals and was only on the field for 59 minutes. He was substituted on the hour mark after a head injury following an elbow from Sinisa Mihajlovic in an aerial challenge but by then he had wrecked Yugoslavia's defence.
A quiet opening hardly hinted at the exhibition of top class finishing to come.
Predrag Mijatovic was put clear in the middle of goal in the 14th after good work on the left by Savo Milosevic but Mijatovic hit his shot too close to Edwin van der Sar.
Dennis Bergkamp fired a shot from the left a minute later when hee cut inside and curled a shot with his right foot which Kralj palmed away and then Kluivert took over the game with four goals in thirty six minutes either side of the interval.
Kluivert controlled the ball in the 22nd minute with his back to goal and layed off a pass to Dennis Bergkamp. The Arsenal man then fed the ball over the top of the defence into Kluivert's run and the Barca star brought the ball down and drove it through Kralj from close range.
Kralj then had to dive and save a low shot on the run from Boudewijn Zenden and another low drive from Artur Numan before Kluivert struck again.
The second goal was similar to the first but with Edgar Davids clipping the ball through the middle of the Yugoslav defence allowing Kluivert to fire low into the net.
The 50th minute brought Kluivert's hat trick.
Kralj fisted away a free kick but the ball reached Zenden on the right. He steamed forward and crossed into the near post where Kluivert had run ahead of his marker to slash the ball into the roof of the net.
Zenden was then put clear by a cross from Overmars but Kralj saved bravely at his feet and the 58th minute saw Kluivert hit his fourth goal.
This was an instinctive finish with a right foot shot across Kralj and into the far corner on the volley after Zenden had run down the left and driven a pass into Kluivert's body. The striker needed no time to readjust for the killer shot but timed the ball to just strike his foot to be directed into the net.
Substitute Roy Makaay who replaced the four goal hero then almost scored with his first touch - a glancing header which went wide of the far post at a free kick.
Cocu hit a long range shot off the top of the cross bar in the 70th minute and Marc Overmars then completed the scoring.
First he flicked a Dennis Bergkamp cross from the left up in the air and volleyed the ball into the roof of the net in the 77th minute and in the dying seconds he struck a first time shot after Cocu had hit the post with a left foot shot after cutting inside on a run.
Savo Milosevic scored an injury time consolation when Predrag Mijatovic hit a great dipping volley against the bar from long range. The Zaragoza striker followed up well to shoot the loose ball into the net.
This was the best team performance yet at Euro 2000 and the best display by an individual with Kluivert hitting four world class finishes..
Holland now meet Italy on Thursday night in the second semi final.
