Austria ease past sad Scotland

First Published: Apr 30, 2003

Austria comfortably beat Scotland 2-0 in their friendly international here at Hampden Park.

First half goals from Roland Kirchler and Mario Vaas were more than enough to give the visitors a win over a Scotland team who barely managed a decent shot on goal.

It was a dire display by Berti Vogts' men and come the final whistle they were booed off the pitch by a meagre crowd of just over 12,000.

Austria took the lead in the 28th minute when a deep cross from the right came over to the unmarked Michael Wagner. His chip into the box was turned in by Kirchler's outstretched boot.

And six minutes later Austria were 2-0 up. Lee Wilkie almost lost the ball close to his own box but managed to pass back to keeper Paul Gallacher.

But Gallacher was tackled in possession by Haas who nipped in for a simple goal.

Vogts made five substitutions at half time but Scotland never truly looked like getting back into the game. The closest they came to a goal was when Gary Naysmith and Kenny Miller both shot well over the bar.

And Scotland were lucky that the final scoreline was not 3-0 to Austria when substitute when Ronald Brunmayr blazed over at the far post late on.
