Fulham have been given a month by FIFA to stump up the 4.57 million euros they owe Lyon for French striker Steve Marlet.
The 28-year-old Marlet moved from Lyon in August 2001 on a five year contract but the final instalment of his transfer is still outstanding.
Premiership side Fulham were told of the decision by football's world governing body on Wednesday night, FIFA told AFP Thursday.
The struggling English side could face a transfer embargo if the money is not forthcoming.
The FIFA ultimatium came the same day they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Burnley, losing the fifth round replay 3-0 to the first division side.
In the Premiership Jean Tigana's side are hovering 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
