Sporting without injured Beto for up to six weeks

Defending champions Sporting Lisbon will have to do without Portuguese international Roberto Severo "Beto" for up to six weeks after the defender underwent surgery on his left shoulder.

"The operation went well," said doctor Artur Pereira de Castro, adding that Beto would be kept off the pitch for between four to six weeks.

The 26-year-old hurt his shoulder during his team's 1-0 victory over Estrela da Amadora in the Portuguese Cup on Wednesday.

It was only the second match Beto has played since being operated on a left knee injury in November.

The shoulder injury means Beto will no longer be an option for Portugal coach Luiz Filipe Scolari during an upcoming friendly against Italy on February 12 to be played in Genoa.

Sporting are third in the Portuguese league, six points behind giants Benfica and 17 points behind FC Porto.
