Lehmann makes quiet debut for Arsenal

German international goalkeeper Jens Lehmann kept a clean sheet on his debut for Arsenal in a pre-season friendly against Turkish champions Besiktas.

The Borussia Dortmund keeper moved to Highbury last week as a replacment for England keeper David Seaman who has joined Manchester City.

Lehmann's abilities were rarely tested in the first half and in the second he was replaced by Stuart Taylor.

Arsenal won the encounter 1-0 thanks to a 48th minute goal by 34-year-old Dennis Bergkamp who last week signed a new one-year deal with the London club.

The Dutch international netted three minutes into the second half, prodding home a pass from Swedish midfielder Freddie Ljungberg.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger got little chance to assess Lehmann, signed by the Frenchman after a long search for a goalkeeper following Seaman's departure.

Lehmann was briefly forced into action when Pancu flashed a shot just wide of his left-hand post but otherwise he did not have a save to make.

Arsenal now play Celtic on Saturday and Rangers on Tuesday as their preparations for the new season continue.
