English Premiership side Aston Villa agreed a fee of 2.25million pounds (3.6million dollars) for First Division Sunderland's Danish international goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.
New Villa manager David O'Leary had tried to bring England keeper Paul Robinson from his former club Leeds but when that failed he made a move for 27-year-old Sorensen.
A statement on Villa's official website said: "The club can confirm that it has had discussions with Thomas Sorensen's agent about him moving to Aston Villa.
"However, a deal cannot be concluded as the keeper is still in discussions with Sunderland about monies due to him from that club."
Sorensen, cost Sunderland 500,000 pounds (800,000 dollars) from Odense in August 1998 and was a member of the team relegated from the Premiership last season.
