Borussia Dortmund's international midfielder Sebastian Kehl was suspended for six weeks after attacking the referee during Monday's German League Cup final.
The German football federation's disciplinary commission imposed the ban, which runs until September 8, following the incident in which his team were beaten 4-2 by SV Hamburg.
Kehl's frustration boiled over when his teammate Otto Addo had been sent off for attacking an opponent.
The 23-year-old Kehl, who has won 18 caps, shoved the referee Stefan Aust and joined Addo on the sidelines.
His punishment means he will miss Dortmund's opening league fixture against Schalke 04 on Saturday but will be available for his side's Champions League third qualifying round tie against FC Bruges.
