Kanoute set for Spurs move: report

First Published: May 30, 2003

West Ham striker Frederic Kanoute is set to bolster Glenn Hoddle's strikeforce at Tottenham Hotspur following the Hammers relegation to Division One, his agent said.

Kanoute's agent Willie McKay confirmed that the London clubs had held talks and Kanoute, who has recently recovered from a spate of injury problems that scuppered his season, could make the switch in two weeks.

It is believed that the Frenchman could move to White Hart Lane for around four million pounds (6.6 million dollars).

"Freddie is very keen to go to Tottenham because he feels it would be a great move for him," McKay told the BBC.

"He is disappointed he didn't play many games last year because he thinks if he had then West Ham wouldn't have gone down.

"He's been to America and has now had his injury problems sorted out.

"There has been interest from other Premiership clubs, but Freddie believes Tottenham are best suited to him and he thinks he could strike up a good partnership with Robbie Keane.

"Freddie obviously wants to play in the Premiership and (manager) Glenn Hoddle has told the Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy, that Freddie is the player he wants.

"At the moment it's a question of price and it's down to the two clubs to agree on one, but I think it will be in the region of four million (pounds).

"Hopefully it should be wrapped up in the next couple of weeks. Tottenham are a big club and Freddie is keen to join them."

West Ham have just been relegated and are keen to offload some of their top stars as they prepare for life in the less lucrative Division One.

However the Hammers are aiming for a quick return to the Premiership and want to keep Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe, who have all been the subject of interest from other top-flight clubs.
