Deportivo surge past stuttering PSV

First Published: Sep 30, 2003

Deportivo La Coruna earned an important 2-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven and put themselves back in the driving seat to earn qualification from Group C.

Having drawn their opening match with AEK Athens, Depor needed three points and got them after Sergio Gonzalez put the Spaniards ahead after 20 minutes and Walter Pandiani put the match beyond PSV's reach with a 51st minute penalty.

The Dutch side's hesitant approach almost cost them dear in the opening minutes as Kevin Hofland headed Alberto Luque's cross on to his own crossbar and Pandiani wastefully headed over the bar.

Depor's opener came after a neat passing move which culminated with Sergio's low shot that was deflected past PSV keeper Ronald Waterreus.

The match was killed off when Hofland pushed Juan Valeron over in the area and Pandiani converted from the spot to score his seventh goal in seven Spanish league and Champions League matches.
