Italian footballers will don special jerseys this weekend to celebrate the 75 million people set to become the "new Europeans" on May 1.

Players from Italy's top two divisions will head on to the pitch in blue jerseys bearing yellow stars symbolising the EU countries and the words "Benvenuti in Europa" or Welcome to Europe.

The footballers' message is one of a number of events marking the entry of 10 countries from eastern Europe and the Mediterranean into the European Union on Saturday.
