Auxerre go second after five star display

First Published: Jan 31, 2004

Auxerre moved into second place behind Monaco after a 5-0 demolition of former champions Bordeaux in an early French league game.

Bordeaux were blown away by a four-goal first-half blitz. Djibril Cisse, who is hoping to join Liverpool, showed why he is the league's top scorer this season with a double, his second just before the break a penalty awarded after the France international was fouled by Bruno Basto.

Kanga Akale doubled Auxerre's advantage with an 11th minute header off a corner taken by captain Yann Lachuer.

Lachuer was also instrumental in the next, when his cross found Teemu Tainio prowling around the penalty area, the Finnish international's header flying past keeper Ulrich Rame.

Akale struck again on the hour to leave Auxerre on 41 points, level with Lyon, but the reigning champions have a chance to reclaim second place when they turn out against relegation strugglers Toulouse later Saturday.

This loss capped the end of a painful week for the 1999 titleholders Bordeaux, who were knocked out of the French Cup by Bayonne.

Monaco enjoy a seven point advantage over veteran coach Guy Roux's side after a 1-1 draw with fourth-placed Paris Saint Germain on Friday.
