Borussia Dortmund and coach Matthias Sammer have reached agreement to part company at the end of June, Gerd Niebaum, president of the Bundesliga club said.

"We are in perfect agreement that an immediate split is the best solution even if both sides regret this," Niebaum explained.

Former German international Sammer, 36, had been held in high regard within the Westfalen Stadium after winning the 1997 Champions League with Dortmund as a player and then guiding the club to the German title in 2002.

But the club finished just sixth in the Bundesliga this season and as a result of their early Champions League elimination suffered losses of 29.4 million euros in the six months up to December 2003.

"A change will give a fresh boost to Borussia and bring the club back into calmer waters," agreed Sammer.

He has been in talks with Bundesliga rival's VfB Stuttgart who are on the lookout for a new coach with Felix Magath's departure for Bayern Munich.
