Former Everton and Rangers manager Walter Smith will be confirmed as the new manager of Scotland on Thursday, according to the BBC.

Neither Smith nor the Scottish Football Association would make any official comment on Tuesday.

However, the ratification of his appointment by the SFA board is expected to be a formality with the four-man executive board having been unanimous in their decision to go for the 56-year-old Smith.

Smith has been the favourite to take over from Berti Vogts since the German left the post but the fans wanted former Southampton and Coventry manager and Manchester United player Gordon Strachan.

Vogts resigned with Scotland having taken only two points from their opening three World Cup qualifiers, making it all but impossible for the team to qualify for the 2006 finals in Germany.
