Hapoel captain Abas Suan (C) and Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt (R) are both sent off during the UEFA Cup match at St James' Park. Newcastle boss Graeme Souness urged his side to keep their heads and play their own game against the Israeli side in the second leg clash.
Newcastle boss Graeme Souness urged his side to keep their heads and play their own game at Israeli Cup winners Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin in the UEFA Cup first round second leg clash.
Newcastle won the St James Park first leg 2-0 but Souness claimed the match was far from over and work still needed to be done to reach the group stages, particularly avoiding getting involved in physical clashes at the Ramat Gan stadium.
"It's important we don't get dragged into the rough stuff, because that's what happened in the first leg," Souness told the club internet site on Thursday.
"That was their plan, and we fell for it. We got involved in the physical side of things, especially in the second half, and it's vital we don't do that again.
"If we play our football we will be OK. At 2-0 the tie is not over yet, so we are going there to get the job done. You can't be complacent and you worry before every game.
"They may score first, there may be a bad refereeing decision, someone may fall over, someone may go to sleep. You never know, but I prefer to look on the positive side of things and say that if we score first, then they have a real job on their hands.
"But I'm confident with the players we have we can overcome them and get into the group stages," added Souness, who was not exactly known for his timdity in his tackling on the pitch when he played for Liverpool and Scotland.
Fellow English club Middlesbrough may be travelling to Czech club Banik Ostrava but their fans will be able to watch the match on giant screens in the Riverside stadium's hospitality suites. Middlesbrough lead 3-0 from the first leg.
Scotland's Rangers will be hoping Nacho Novo can replicate his scoring abilities as they face Portuguese side Maritimo Funchal at Ibrox, trailing 1-0.
Substitute Novo scored twice late on in a three-minute spell to earn Rangers a 2-0 win at Dundee on Sunday to put them second in the Scottish Premier League.
Republic of Ireland club Shelbourne FC will fly to Lille on Tuesday night with a stronger squad than was available to them for the first leg in Dublin two weeks ago where they drew 2-2.
Influential midfielders Alan Moore and Stuart Byrne are back from suspension and both are expected to play on Thursday even though Moore - the side's top scorer in Europe this season with three goals - has a slight ankle injury.
The only absentee is Cameroonian midfielder Joseph Ndo, who has remained in Dublin to receive treatment on a groin injury.
Shelbourne are in fine form at the moment and extended their lead at the top of the League of Ireland Premier Division by beating Dublin rivals Shamrock Rovers last Friday 4-1, with striker Jason Byrne grabbing his second hat-trick in two weeks.
French club Auxerre, who drew 1-1 in the first leg in Denmark, host Aalborg BK without defender Jean-Sebastien Jaures, who has fractured a bone in his left foot and will be out of action for a month.
Jaures is likely to be replaced by Jean-Pascal Mignot, who has completely recovered from a left knee knock from the first leg.
