Alan Shearer grabbed a hat-trick and Patrick Kluivert scored twice as Newcastle brushed past Arab-Israeli rookies Bnei Sakhnin 5-1 to book their place in the UEFA Cup group stage.

The 7-2 aggregate win also kept up Graeme Souness's unbeaten run since he took over from the sacked Bobby Robson as coach at the English Premiership club.

Over 50 busloads of fans had made the trip south from Bnei Sakhnin's base in Nazareth to the national stadium at Ramat Gan to watch the match but they were silenced after just nine minutes when Kluivert opened the scoring.

The Dutchman, who scored both goals in the first leg, played a neat one-two with Jermaine Jenas who set up the striker with a sweet backheel which fell for Kluivert to bury the ball past Energy Murambadoro in goal.

But the Israeli cup winners were back on level terms just four minutes later.

A poor clearing header by Andy O'Brien only got as far as Ahmed Kassum whose cross was cleverly stepped over by Olumida Agoye which allowed Alain Masudi to score from close range past Shay Given.

The match became increasingly untidy with most action on the terraces where police moved in to keep the peace between bickering fans.

However, Newcastle, who won the old Fairs Cup in 1969, kept their cool amongst some rough tackling by the Israeli side and Shearer made it 2-1 in the 38th minute when he slotted in a low cross from Lee Bowyer.

The tie was effectively killed off four minutes later when Kluivert added his second of the night as he was left in plenty of space from Laurent Robert's through ball to beat Murambadoro.

Shearer made it 4-1 seven minutes after the break when he coolly scored from the penalty spot after Jenas had been chopped down.

Murambadoro was then sent-off in the dying minutes for handling outside the area. From the free-kick, Bowyer picked up on a half-save but his goal was ruled out for offside.

In the last minute, however, Shearer made it 5-1 with a sweet left-foot drive from outside the area.
