Champions League holders Liverpool may have missed out on re-signing their former striker Michael Owen but they succeeded in a double transfer swoop for Austrian winger Besian Idrizaj and Wales Under-21 striker Ramon Calliste.

Idrizaj, 17, signed a two-year deal after a trial with Liverpool, having arrived from Linzer ASK and admitted he would have even swum the English Channel to join them.

"I have always been a Liverpool fan and it is a dream come true to play for them," Idrizaj told the club website.

"You cannot ignore a trial with the reigning Champions League winners. I would even have swam across the channel just to take part."

Calliste, 19 and who who was released by Premiership rivals Manchester United at the end of last season, signed a one year deal.

He faces stiff competition for a place in the starting line-up with French international Djibril Cisse, Spanish star Fernando Morientes, young Frenchman Florent Sinama-Pongolle and England international Peter Crouch.

Both the new arrivals were included in the Liverpool reserve team squad for the match against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.
