Blackburn Rovers midfielder Barry Ferguson was set to return to Rangers as time ticked away on transfer deadline day.
The former Rangers captain was undergoing a medical as the two clubs tried to thrash out an agreement.
Rovers recently turned down an offer which would have guaranteed 3.5m million pounds and could have risen to four million pounds after a set number of appearances.
Scotland captain Ferguson handed in a transfer request earlier this month and made it clear he was not interested in any move other than back to Rangers and his native Glasgow, which he left in a 6.5 million pounds deal in 2003.
The midfielder's time in England has been blighted by poor form and a serious injury which resulted in him missing most of last season.
Ferguson's agent, John Viola, stressed the deal was "not quite 100 percent complete" with barely two hours of deadline day remaining.
"Barry is having a medical but there is still a wee bit to go on agreement," he said.
"But they are close enough to allow him to go for a medical tonight so that will tell you that maybe things will go through.
"However, I don't think it is 100 percent agreed yet and there is still a little bit of negotiation to go."
Ferguson did not play in the FA Cup win over Colchester on Saturday despite recovering from a groin injury with Rovers manager Mark Hughes claiming it had been an "emotional and difficult time" for the player.
