Japanese football officials have said there is no evidence that Real Madrid star David Beckham was spat on by a Tokyo Verdy player during their match this week, a report says.

The J-League studied video footage of Verdy's surprise 3-0 victory over the Spanish giants on Monday after Beckham said Kazuyuki Toda spat at him in the first half, Kyodo news agency said.

Toda, who once was loaned for a year to English Premiership club Tottenham, has insisted that he did not spit at Beckham and protested his innocence in a meeting with Verdy officials on Wednesday, Kyodo said.

The team did not plan to make any further investigations, the report said.

"Some spit flew and I think that's why he was angry, but it's not me," Toda told local media after the game.
