Newcastle's Nigerian defender Celestine Babayaro has been banned for three matches after admitting a charge of violent conduct following a fracas with Everton's Tim Cahill during a Premiership match on Sunday.

Babayaro and Australian midfielder Cahill let fly at each other after tangling in the penalty area at Goodison Park during Everton's 1-0 win.

Cahill had until 1800 GMT on Wednesday to decide whether to follow Babayaro's action. Otherwise he will face a Football Association disciplinary commission on Thursday.

Babayaro begins his ban by sitting out Wednesday's League Cup fourth round match at Wigan and will also miss home league matches against Aston Villa and Arsenal.
