Rangers winger DaMarcus Beasley will undergo surgery on his injured knee in the United States and is facing several months on the sidelines, manager Walter Smith confirmed Friday.

The US international suspects he suffered ligament damage when he had to be substituted after colliding with Stuttgart goalkeeper Raphael Schafer during Tuesday night's 3-2 Champions League defeat to the Germans.

Smith said: "He has to go for an operation, which he'll go to America for and we'll have a better idea after that operation but it will be months before he's back.

"How many we're not quite sure, but it will certainly be months before he's back."

The 25-year-old is also set to miss internationals against Sweden and Mexico with the US national team early next year.
