Turkey 2 Moldova 0, March 27th 1999

First Published: Mar 27, 1999

Turkey shrugged off the resurgence of Germany as a threat in Euro 2000 group three this afternoon to move to the top of the section with a skilful 2-0 win in Istanbul.

The Turks are still glowing after their defeat of the Germans last October but saw their rivals get back to winning ways with an easy win in Belfast against Northern Ireland.

A big crowd in Istanbul fired up the side to seize the initiative again and they have star striker Hakan Sukur to thank for the victory.

The big hit man headed the home team into the lead in the 32nd minute with a precisely placed header and they never looked like surrendering the advantage.

Moldova were weakened after Oleg Shishkin was sent off on the hour for a wild tackle from behind but Turkey had to wait until the last seconds of normal time for their second goal. Sergei Yalcin walked the ball up to the Moldovan goal and rounded the goalkeeper to finish the contest.
