Moldova 0 Northern Ireland 0, March 31st 1999

First Published: Mar 31, 1999

Northern Ireland were all but dumped out of group three contention with a grim draw in Moldova.

The first half was marginally better than a dismal second and the Irish showed some attacking determination in the opening minutes. Midfielder Steve Lomas hit a hard drive that whizzed just wide and Radu Rebejc missed an open goal just before half time but both sides showed little imagination in their forward moves.

Poor passing and slow ideas marred the game after the interval and the Irish could not raise their game to take them past a side who had not won for four years.
