Rangers were tortured in a first half at the Olympic Stadium in Munich that saw the Scottish champions create the best chances but concede a dubious penalty that cost them the match.

Stefan Effenberg finished the penalty kick with a piece of luck as his low plant to the right of goalkeeper Stefan Klos slipped under the dive of the Rangers man and into the net.

The penalty had been given for a push on Mehmet Scholl after Effenberg had passed the ball to him in the area but the decision seemed harsh as Scholl tumbled to the ground with very little encouragement.

Either side of this set back Rangers hit the wood of the Bayern goal.

Michael Mols slapped a header against a post after a cross from Van Bronkhorst from the left and later in the half Rod Wallace turned a fired an Arthur Numan cross from the left against the underside of the cross bar.

Rangers pressurised the German defence in the second half but could find no way through on a night of no luck for them.
