Feyenoord 1 Rosenborg 0

Dutch champions Feyenoord made it into the second stage of the Champions League with a 1-0 home win over Rosenborg of Trondheim.

The Norwegian champions secured their qualification two weeks ago but the Rotterdam club needed help from Portuguese side Boavista to deny Borussia Dortmund and send the Dutch through in their place.

Dortmund - the 1997 champions - lost in Portugal 1-0 and that allowed Feyenoord to take over in second place with this narrow win.

In the end everything worked out well for the Dutch but they had to find a late goal and overcome a defensive Norwegian team. Feyenoord were nervous throughout the night and saw Rosenborg striker John Carew almost sink them with the best chance of the night from a header at a corner kick but the ball went to defender Tomasz Rzasa and he cleared the danger in the 75th minute.

Bonaventure Kalou set up the 86th minute goal that killed the game and all Dutch fears when he twisted away from two challenges to cross for substitute Somalia to head in from close range. The Rotterdam fans celebrated that goal with gusto and again when the score from Boavista was announced.
