Kyiv Dynamo progressed to the second stage of the Champions League despite a 1-0 home defeat by Serie A leaders SS Lazio.
The Ukraine side were semi finalists last season and reached the last sixteen of this campaign when Bayer Leverklusen were held to a 0-0 home draw by NK Maribor. Kyiv finished level with the Bundesliga team on seven points in Group A but have a draw and 4-2 win against the German side in the group stage and this ensured their passage into the next stage.
Kyiv are still led by Alexei Mikhailichenko as veteran coach Valery Lobanovsky is still recovering from recent bouts of bronchitis and heart problems.
The caretaker saw his side fail to recover from an early concession to the Italian side who were missing several of their major stars and had to thank the Slovenian side for holding Bayer back in the group's other tie.
It needed an own goal for Lazio to take the lead when defender Ramiz Mamedov deflected a clearance into his own net and this produced some home pressure which saw the Italian's reserve goalkeeper make an excellent save in the 24th minute when he tipped away Andriy Gustin's close range header.
Simone Inzaghi fluffed the best chance of the second half as the Italian defence held out with Kyiv dominating possession. He ran clean through on goal but Alexander Shovkovsky defied him with an excellent low save in the 87th minute.
