Kyiv Dynamo 1 Real Madrid 2

First Published: Nov 24, 1999

The Ukraine army spent two hours before kick-off clearing a thin layer of snow from the pitch at the national stadium and by the end of the night Dynamo's Group C hopes were heading for cold storage after this 2-0 win for a managerless Real Madrid.

The thermometer at pitch side showed -11 but the Spanish attack coped well with the conditions and proved too much for the home side.

Fernando Morientes helped the visiting side build a two goal lead in the 17th minute.

A through ball from Roberto Carlos - another stranger to the frozen conditions and well wrapped up for the occasion - fed a through pass to Morientes from the left and the cross produced a neat finish at close range as markers lost the young striker.

Raul made it 2-0 in the 48th minute when e created space on the edge of the area to fire the ball high into the net. This was the signal for Kyiv to play well and their pressure led to a Rebrov clipped finish from close range with five minutes to go but Real held out to head back to warmer climes with three points.
