SS Lazio recovered from their derby hangover to score a deserved win against an intimidated OM side at the Velodrome.
The Rome club have a reputation for good play and excellent finishing and the French players talked nervously to the press yesterday about expecting a backlash from the Italians after their pitiful derby display against AS Roma in a 4-1 defeat on Sunday.
Lazio's Formello training ground was stormed by angry fans on Monday morning after that display but the Laziali would have been happier with this win.
The away side waited patiently for openings to arrive in the second half after a blank first half of midfield tactics and little creativity.
Giuseppe Pancaro set up the first goal in the 64th minute by launching a high cross into the area which was met with a downward header from Dejan Stankovic.
In the 78th minute the home defence were caught trying to play the off side tactic on the retreat and Marcelo Salas burst through their back ranks to draw goalkeeper Stephane Porato before sliding the ball through to Sergio Conceicao to tap the ball into the net.
Lazio host Juventus in clash of Italy's top two on Sunday night and warmed up well for that meeting in game they always controlled with flashes of grate technique and much more discipline than they produced against Roma.
Their next Champions League date is on December 7th at home to Chelsea.
