PSV Eindhoven 2 Bayern Munich 1

First Published: Oct 27, 1999

This defeat in Holland leaves Bayern looking for a home win against Rangers next week with the Scottish champions needing only a point from the game to go through and edge out last season's finalists.

The 2-1 victory was the first for PSV in Group F and they now have the chance of a UEFA Cup place if Bayern lose and they win in Valencia.

Bayern came to defend in depth and it took the Dutch side until the 40th minute to produce the move that got them on the score sheet.

Luc Nilis turned the ball across the penalty area for Van Nistelrooy to finish from close range.

Bayern found an equaliser from 17 year old Paraguayan Roque Santa Cruz who ran in to finish in the 51st minute after Stefan Effenberg had seen a low shot blocked into the path of the striker.

Van Nistelrooy turned provider to win the game and he steered the ball on to the 57th minute run of Luc Nilis who smashed the ball high into the roof of the net from just inside the area.

Jens Jeremies was sent off for a second booking by English referee Paul Durkin in the last minute and the two camps clashed with shoving and pushing at the side of the pitch in an untidy end to the match.
