After extra time - full time score 1-1

An old fashioned pitch invasion caused a ten minute delay as Nigeria needed extra-time to beat outsiders Senegal 2-1 to set up a clash with South Africa on Thursday in the African Nations Cup semi finals.

Nigerian fans ran onto the pitch after a 92nd minute extra-time winner ended Senegalese resistance.

18 year old Julius Aghahowa scored the winner and also a 94th minute equaliser to set the competition alight.

At one stage it looked as if Senegal would try to abandon the game as fans celebrated on the pitch in Lagos but they reluctantly carried on in the face of what almost turned into a riot.

Senegal were six minutes from a sensational win Kalidou Fadiga had crushed early Nigerian optimism with a sixth minute goal. He accepted the ball on the edge of the area and took it over to his left side before driving the ball into the net with a volley.

Nigeria controlled the game after that but only broke through at the death when teenage sub changed Nations Cup history.

Aghahowa converted a low cross to set up extra time. He started that session with a low drive to send the game into delay and the Nigerian fans into wild celebrations. The favourites then clamped down on the play and protected their lead and Austin Okocha was sent off for a scuffle with a Senegal defender.

The PSG star now misses the semi final through suspension and the CAF may order the game to be played behind closed doors after the pitch invasion which could see Nigeria punished severely.
