Gold Cup - Colombia 0 Honduras 2

First Published: Feb 17, 2000

Colombia scraped into the last eight of the CONCACAF Gold Cup but found Honduras too quick for them in Miami.

The South Americans will meet the US hosts in their next game and need to improve on this showing.

Honduras themselves were rewarded for this effort with a tie against Peru in the quarter finals.

Colombia are still suffering after their 9-0 hammering by Brazil in the Olympic qualifying stage two weeks ago that saw national team coach Javier Alvarez fired. This gave new boss Luis Garcia less than week to prepare for the CONCACAF tournament and the South Americans never looked organised enough to hold out against a quick passing and hard running Honduras side.

Honduras took the lead in the 74th minute after captain Calros Pavon hot a shot on the run from the right hand flank. Goalkeeper Miguel Calero could not prevent the cross shot from reaching the far corner of the net and Pavon then set up the second goal for his side by clipping a cross from the right onto the head of Milton Nunez to seal the win in the 78th minute.
