Kyiv Dynamo 2 Rosenborg 1

First Published: Feb 29, 2000

Kyiv Dynamo survived late pressure from Rosenborg to hold onto a narrow win in the Ukraine this evening.

This was the first win for Kyiv in the second stage of the competition and gives the semi finalists of last season a little hope of progress this term.

In truth Kyiv will need to play much better than this to stand a chance of overhauling Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.

The home team started well with midfielder Alexander Khatskevich firing in a low shot to give Kyiv the lead and Serhiy Rebrov produced a close range finish in the 29th minute to seemingly set the Ukrainians up for a big win.

The second half did not match these expectations for Kyiv. Rosenborg came out and had pulled a goal back inside two minutes of the restart.

A low drive from Jahn Ivar Jakobsen put the Norwegians back into the game and they took control but failed to create great chances until Jakobsen broke through on goal in the 84th minute. He carried the ball up to goalkeeper Olexander Shovkovsky and sent in a low shot that gave Shovkovsky the chance to parry the ball. The save looked to be heading into the net but the ball hit the far post and stayed out.
