Chile crashed to a 1-0 defeat in La Paz against Bolivia and are now outsiders to reach the 2002 World Cup finals.

The game was played at high altitude which always effects visiting teams and Chile were missing Marcelo Salas who is serving a two match ban after a red card in their previous World Cup match.

Roger Suarez broke through the defence to hit an 85th minute winner from close range that robbed Chile of a point for their defensive display.

Chile goalkeeper Nelson Tapia was in good form throughout but his team not have four points from five matches and Bolivia join them on that mark in the CONMEBOL table.

Tapia saved at the feet of Suarez in the 11th minute and Bolivia hit eight more shots on target for him to deal with in the first half. Marco Sandy hit a volley against the bar and saw Tapia slap a close range shot over the goal at the last possible instant.

Ivan Zamorano limped off the field with an injury in the second half and he dominated Chile's brief attacks with three shots that were saved by Mauricio Soria.
