Colombia have overtaken Brazil in the CONMEBOL table for 2002 World Cup qualification with a 1-0 win in Lima against Peru.
The visitors defended throughout the entire game that Peru dominated with various attacking moves but snatched the winner in the 48th minute when River Plate star Juan Pablo Angel hit a shot on the turn that caught the home goalkeeper - Johnny Vegas - unsighted.
Peru hit the crossbar twice and put the Colombian goal under heavy pressure while the visitors seemed disinterested in forming any attacks of their own.
Colombia had dumped their captain Freddie Rincon from the squad for this match and the veteran midfielder signalled his retirement from the international game and they missed his ability to set up midfield possession.
Their star of the night was goalkeeper Oscar Cordoba who made an exceptional second half save from Roberto Palacios from point blank range as Peru tried to get back into the match.
Palacios saw a shot deflected against the cross bar in the first half while substitute Carlos Flores slapped a shot against the woodwork from a fee kick after the break. Palacios also saw a header cleared from the goal line in the dying seconds of the game as Colombia used up their 2002 World Cup luck in just one match.
