Chile continued their poor form in 2002 World Cup qualifiers but managed a 2-0 win over lowly Venezuela in San Cristobal.
The visiting team needed two late goals after missing a penalty to overcome the Venezuelan defence and their counter attack tactics looked like getting no results until the 70th minute when substitute Hector Tapia drove in from the edge of the penalty area.
The visitors then set about defending their lead but Giovanni Savarese got clear of the back markers to steer a shot over the bar in the 80th minute in the home team's last chance to save a point.
Ivan Zamorano settled the match in injury time with a diving header.
Earlier Venezuelan goalkeeper Gilberto Angelucci was tested in the fifth minute with a dipping shot from West Ham defender Javier Margas which he needed to dive to turn over.
Francisco Rojas earned the penalty in the 10th minute but Zamorano sent s low shot at goal from the spot that Angelucci saved well.
In the 24th minute Venezuela's Rubert Moran had a shot cleared off the line by Ronald Fuentes in the closest they came to a goal. Chile now have seven points from six matches but are well off the pace in the CONMEBOL section.
