Ten man Bordeaux mounted stiff resistance against Manchester United but late substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the goal that sees the holders on the brink of the quarter finals.
Solskjaer broke clear in the 84th minute to carry the ball to two French defenders before wrong footing them by stepping inside to the central goal position and scooping the ball clear of goalkeeper Rame for a neat finish.
United celebrated the goal long and hard as it seemed unlikely to come as Bordeaux hung on to the chance of a draw.
The home side took a well earned lead after a good start in front of their own fans. Captain Michel Pavon got on the score sheet with his long range effort but the goal was down to United goalkeeper Raimond Van der Gouw. Thee Dutchman - starting his third game in a row after manager Sir Alex ferguson dropped Mark Bosnich last week - caught the shot in front of his face but then allowed it to rear up and through his hands behind him into the net.
The game turned in the 23rd minute when Lilian Laslandes received a booking for playing on after the referee's whistle. French international Laslandes then compounded his error by leaving his foot in on a challenge to David Beckham. Beckham jumped and was caught on the foot according to television replays for a painful knock but the atmosphere between the sides soured as Beckham held his shin and Laslandes was dismissed. At the end of th game two Bordeaux players exchanged words and what looked like a spit at United captain Roy Keane.
The Irish star restored parity for the champions in a goal that saw Teddy Sheringham caught in an offside position but the goal stood despite this. Rame saved the Irishman's first effort but Keane cashed in on the rebound.
The second half remained even despite the man advantage enjoyed by United. Rame saved a low shot from Ryan Giggs but Micoud hit the post with an excellent volley after Stephane Viani split United's defence with a looping cross.
Van der Gouw saved Wiltord's best effort of the night when he carried the ball past Jaap Stam and cut inside to fire at goal but Solskjaer came on to save the game for the English side and knock Bordeaux out of the competition.
