SS Lazio hammered Olympique Marseille in the Stadio Olimpico but still need a result at Chelsea next week to make certain of a place in the last eight of the Champions League.

This is despite four goals from Simone Inzaghi and the striker missed the chance of a fifth when he struck a penalty at Marseille goalkeeper Stephane Porato.

Porato at least defied Inzaghi on that occasion but in the 17th minute he was helpless as Lazio took the lead when the four goal striker hit his first of the night.

Pavel Nedved sent the front runner through on goal and his neat finish went through the goalkeeper's legs.

The Rome side were missing the suspended Juan Veron in midfield and lacked the creativity and power he brings to the side but Dejan Stankovic understudied the Argentine well with some neat passing.

Inzaghi's great night continued with a low drive past Porato in the 37th minute after he had brought down a pass from Conceicao into his path and the former Piacenza man claimed his hat trick a minute later when Porato dropped a shot from Boksic and Inzaghi touched the ball over the line.

OM revived in the second half when Jerome Leroy headed in a driven free kick from Ivan de la Pena in the 50th minute and had a goal disallowed for offside.

Alen Boksic completed the scroing with an 82nd minute header after Inzaghi had fluffed his penalty chance in the 60th minute but claimed a fourth goal with a low finish in the 71st minute from in front of goal.
