Girondins Bordeaux 1 Valencia 4

First Published: Mar 16, 2000

Valencia hammered Bordeaux on their visit to wine country and need only to avoid defeat when they host Manchester United next week to get to the quarter finals of the Champions League.

It all went wrong for the French side just after half time. They were already trailing after a fortunate deflection from Valencia defender Miroslav Djukic from a corner found the net in the 41st minute and then the game was lost when Nisa Saveljic hauled down Juan Sanchez on a run into the penalty area and was red carded.

Gaizka Mendieta the Valencia captain stroked in the penalty kick and the French side were forced to expose their under manned defence as they chased the game.

They did so with some success when Sylvain Wiltord hit a great low shot into the net for an instinctive finish in the 55th minute.

Valencia established control again when Kily Gonzalez hit a dipping and swerving shot on target in the 71st minute and a close range finish from Juan Sanchez added a fourth in injury time as the ten Frenchmen ran out of luck.
