Real Madrid did just enough to book their place in the last eight of the Champions League and are the third Spanish team to go into Friday's draw.

They could now face FC Barcelona, Manchester United or SS Lazio after Raul scored the only goal of the game.

The decisive moment came early. In only the third minute Raul took the ball on himself and showed it to two markers before running ahead of them and slotting a low and accurate drive into the net. Real could have extended their lead in the 42nd minute but Steve McManaman was unlucky when his powerful drive came back off the post.

With Kyiv winning at home to Bayern Munich and snow starting to fall the second half became a test of will for the Spanish side as ther were reduced to ten men in the 53rd minute when Guti was sent off for his second booking of the night. Real hung on to join the elite of the competition and Rosenborg rarely showed enough in attack to threaten them. One goal from the Trondheim side and Real were out and the Spanish side were unwilling to take any risks.
