Daniel Passarella started his 2002 World Cup campaign as his new Uruguayan charges scored the only goal in a Montevideo match of few chances.
Both sides concentrated on defence with Uruguay having much of the initiative. They seemed content to ease themselves into this latest World Cup qualifying marathon and Pablo Garcia's goal in the 26th minute was all they really wanted from this game.
Garcia was allowed to approach the Boloivian goal and sent in a long range shot into the corner.
