2002 World Cup - Guatemala 2 Costa Rica 1

Guatemala remain in World Cup qualifying contention after this 2-1 win over Costa Rica which forces a play-off between the two sides.

A place in six group phase next year is at stake as Costa Rica failed to get the single point they needed.

Carlos Ruiz put the home team in front in the 48th minute when he reached a low cross to steer the ball in but Rolando Fonseca equalised in the 71st minute from a low drive.

Ruiz had the last word though when he scored from close range in the 87th minute. The two sides finished level on points and goals scored and goals against with the play-off venue yet to be decided.
