2002 World Cup - Chile 0 Argentina 2

First Published: Nov 16, 2000

Argentina have all but clinched qualification for the 2002 World Cup finals after this well worked win in Santiago.

Chile have now lost three matches in a row and are losing all hope of reaching the finals.

Argentina maintained their five point lead at the top of the CONMEBOL section over Brazil and Paraguay in an untidy and bad tempered game where the vistors showed a killer instinct in front of goal to seal the win.

Ariel Ortega beat three defenders in the 27th minute to slide the ball under goalkeeper Nelson Tapia for an excellent solo effort.

Pablo Contreras hit the bar with a header in the 43rd minute after German Burgos touched his effort onto the frame of the goal and Ortega provided the through ball for Claudio Husain to smash the ball high into the net late in the second half.
