First Published: Nov 21, 2000

Valencia failed to impress but had more than enough to overwhelm Sturm Graz.

The Austrian team are poor travellers and did not create a decent chance as the Spaniards scored either side of half time to in the match.

John Carew headed in a Gaizka Mendieta corner in the last minute of the first half and two minutes after the interval Mendieta repeated the trick for Juan Sanchez to head in.

Sanchez and Carew wasted second half chances to extend the lead in a scrappy game that extended Valencia's unbeaten run at home in European matches to 25 games.

Kily Gonzalez hit the post with a low drive and Carew wasted the best chance of the night in the closing stages when he was clear through on goal but the Norwegian skied his effort way over the cross bar.
