Champions League - Anderlecht 2 Manchester United 1

First Published: Oct 24, 2000

Anderlecht produced a great first half display to shock Manchester United with a 2-1 defeat.

PSV Eindhoven's win in Kyiv means United's Champions League destiny is now out of their hands if they cannot beat Kyiv in two weeks.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson continues to insult the club's Champions League opponents and his side are paying the price.

Ferguson criticised Anderlecht as a "small club" before this game and his words do nothing but inspire the opposition to raise their game.

Over the last two seasons United have found away games in Europe hard enough without Ferguson going out of his way to inspire and anger the teams his side must beat.

He slammed PSV Eindhoven in a sour feud and the Dutch side handed out a 3-1 beating in Holland and a pettern is now emerging.

Anderlecht started this game brilliantly and United were struggling in the first half hour.

By the time they got back into the match they were trailing 2-0 and needed a disputed penalty to offer them some hope in the tie.

Mickael Silvestre played the Tomas Radzinski onside in the 18th minute when a great through pass from Alin Stoica put him clear.

The Canadian international ran on and slipped the ball wide of Fabien Barthez into the net.

Barthez then had to defy Radzinski with a good save from a header and Jan Koller also produced a good save from the United goalkeeper but a second goal was coming.

Koller put Stoica clear on the left and his low cross was swept into the net but United were to get a life line after that 32nd minute strike.

Dwight Yorke found Andy Cole with a through pass and Crasson was penalised for his challenge.

Dennis Irwin converted the penalty kick but slipped as he took the shot and did well to keep it under control.

United improved in the second half but the damage had been done.

The English club relied on free kicks and corners from David Beckham in the second half but Anderlecht held out to celebrate wildly at the end.
