Spanish champions Deportivo la Coruna needed an 82nd minute goal from Walter Pandiani to reach the second stage of the Champions League.
The goal was set up by substitute Fernando with a run down the left wing and his driven cross was headed down and in by the Uruguayan striker.
Deportivo saw Cesar Sampaio and Djalminha produce drives which went just wide in the first half in a close match of mediocre finishing until Pandiani's header.
Fernado was the key to Deprotvio's progress and his cleve runs always looked likely to find a way clear of the Greek defence.
