Champions League - AS Monaco 4 Galatasary 2

First Published: Oct 25, 2000

AS Monaco are back in Champions League contention after holding out for a win with 9 men.

Gala coach Mircea Lucescu is under real pressure now after this result meant the Turkish side need to beat Sturm Graz in Istanbul to ensure their progress but they were 3-0 down inside half an hour in the principality.

20 year old goalkeeper Karem had a poor game as replacement for the injured Claudio Taffarel and he failed to keep out a 5th minute header from Chilean Pablo Contras. Bernal added the second with an angled drive.

Marco Simone hit a low drive for the third goal but Gala scored shortly after with Gheorghe Hagi back heeling into Unsal's path for him to score with a near post finish.

Nonda extended the home side's lead with an curling drive but Monaco conceded a goal in the second half and had two players sent off.

Hakan Unsal grabbed his second from close range but the nine men finished strongly with Simone forcing two great saves late on from Karem.
