Champions League - SK Sturm Graz 2 Glasgow Rangers 0

First Published: Oct 25, 2000

Sturm Graz continued their great home form in the Champions League by beating Glasgow Rangers 2-0.

Rangers coach Dick Advocaat's mood will not be helped by this result.

They host AS Monaco in November and will need a win to ensure their progress to the next stage as they failed to defy the statistics and damage Sturm Graz' excellent home record.

Advocaat was furious after his side's Sunday defeat at St Johnstone and claimed his players were only interested in suntanning, golf and their web sites in an accurate description of the modern professional's attitude to the game.

He asked for a real improvement as Rangers start to struggle in the SPL but his side were undone by hesitation in defence in the 19th minute after a comfortable start.

A long ball from the right hand side was allowed to run through by Rangers to Sergei Yuran and he arrived in time to round new goalkeeper Jesper Christiansen as Barry Ferguson tried to block him off and the Russian hit the empty net with ease.

Giovanni van Bronkhorst forced a good save from goalkeeper Schikelgruber just before half time but the Dutch star was substituted at half time for Neil McCann to play as Graz concentrated on defending their lead.

Artur Numan was red carded in the 83rd minute for his second booking. He was booked in the first half for coming back onto the pitch after treatment without permission from the referee and blocked an opponent for his second caution.

A 93rd minute close range finish from Gilbert Prolasnik sealed the win.
